CLIMALACT is a supra-regional Operational Group that pursues to develop a brand for sustainability and climate neturality, the CLIMALACT brand, based on sustainability indicators linked to different livestock practices in order to ensure the sustainability and climate neutrality of dairy farms and their value chains.
The CLIMALACT brand is based on the study of the management of the current dairy production system in Asturias and Galicia, considering the joint analysis of the farm and the value chain, in order to select the best practices associated with different types of farms (intensive, semi-intensive, semi-extensive, and extensive) and value chains (short circuits, national, and international). These practices will be selected from existing ones and through the application of technical improvements by evaluating their impact on the productive fabric, the environment, and the rural areas of the dairy sector in Galicia and Asturias.
From this analysis, an integrated sustainability indicator for the CLIMALACT food chain and a climate neutrality protocol will be developed, which will define the farm and value chain models associated with each farm type.
Both the integrated indicator and the climate neutrality protocol will be linked to a software application that allows their estimation and the activities to be carried out in order to achieve the objectives set by the CLIMALACT brand.
All of this will be validated by relevant stakeholders both on the farm and within the value chain, developing an analysis of external mechanisms that facilitate the incorporation of farmers into the brand, and including an assessment of the CAP and recommendations for the designers of the standard.
The ultimate goal of the project is to establish mechanisms that enable the achievement of the objectives set out in the European Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy: a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a 50% reduction in nutrient loss and the use of herbicides, a 20% reduction in the use of fertilizers, and a 25% increase in the management of land under organic farming by 2030, as well as climate neutrality by 2050.
